Inner Child Work: Gentle Practices to Reconnect With Your Younger Self

Your inner child is the part of you that still holds the feelings, needs and memories of your younger self: the wonder and playfulness, and also the moments when you felt unseen, unsafe or alone. Inner child work is the practice of turning toward that part of you with the patience and kindness you may not have received at the time.

Why inner child work can help

Many adult reactions, such as a sudden wave of shame, a strong need to please, or fear of being left out, can feel bigger than the situation in front of us. Sometimes that is because an older feeling is being touched. Inner child work does not try to change the past. It helps you notice these moments and respond to yourself as a caring adult would.

Gentle signs you might explore it

  • You find it hard to rest without feeling guilty.
  • You often put others’ needs far ahead of your own.
  • Criticism feels much heavier than it seems it should.
  • You struggle to play, create or enjoy things just for yourself.

These are not diagnoses, just invitations to be curious.

Three practices to begin

1. A guided meditation to meet your younger self

A calm, guided visualization is a gentle first step. Try the Guided Inner Child Healing Meditation.

2. Write a letter to your inner child

Writing gives your younger self a voice and gives you a way to answer with care. Follow the prompts in How to Write a Letter to Your Inner Child.

3. Speak kind words, daily

Short affirmations repeated over time can soften your inner voice. Start with 20 Inner Child Affirmations.

Go gently

Inner child work can bring up strong emotions. Go slowly, pause whenever you need to, and keep it to a few minutes at first. If painful memories surface or feel overwhelming, working with a licensed therapist can offer the support and safety this deserves.
